NBC announces 'Dracula' series starring Johnathan Rhys Meyers

Actor Johnathan Rhys Meyers will star in the upcoming NBC series "Dracula," set to air in January. The 10 episode series, produced by the same team as PBS's critical favorite, "Downton Abbey" will be based on the Bram Stoker novel. The announcement was made at the annual TCA Summer Press Tour going on for the next two weeks in Beverly Hills.

NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt made the announcement adding the the popularity of Vampires franchises weighed into the decision. “In a world of "Twilight" and "True Blood," it’s great to go back to the original. The book is still fresh and owe have an original, incredible script. We’re very excited about it and it’s going right to series, ” Greenblatt said.

In the series plot, Dracula pretends to be an American entrepreneur in London who wants to bring modern science to the people living there. However, he in actuality seeks revenge on the people who destroyed his life centuries ago before he became a vampire. He also finds himself fascinated with a young woman whom he believes may be a reincarnation of his late wife.

Meyers is best known for his role on the popular Showtime series "The Tudors."
